There’s nothing wrong with being athletic. In a pseudo-sport like pro wrestling, it’s kind of expected of wrestlers to be athletic. And if you happen to wrestle for Vince McMahon, it’s especially helpful to look the part. Some wrestlers happen to be naturally gifted when it comes to their physical attributes that it becomes part of their character. This is particularly the case with several black wrestlers. There was a funny video that came out about the three characters black wrestlers are allowed to play on TV. One particular gimmick that falls into the “happy black wrestler” category is the amazingly talented, naturally athletic black wrestler.
Comedian Sean Smith, with the help of Pixel Brain Productions, presents the three main black archetypes in pro wrestling: the black savage, the happy black wrestler, and the angry black wrestler. I thought I did an okay job showcasing the ten most stereotypically black wrestling characters back in February, but Sean Smith does a way better job here. Especially with the nuances of each character. And even though it’s hilarious, it further compartmentalizes these stereotypes into three smaller groups. In honor of Black History Month, I decided to compile a list of the top black tag teams in professional wrestling history. It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.
