2016: The Year of Wrestling in Pop Culture

Supernatural-UpsetHarleyThe year’s wrapping up, and in the world of professional wrestling, journalists, fans, bloggers, etc., will be declaring their wrestlers and matches of the year. However, here at Cheap Pop Culture, I’d rather give you a breakdown of all the times pro wrestling reared its red-headed step child head in the world of pop culture. So enjoy the second annual of The Year of Wrestling in Pop Culture.

In this wrestling episode, Jane the Virgin tries to show us a glimpse of what it would have probably been like if Kharma had decided to continue wrestling while being pregnant. Spoiler alert: the baby bump would’ve been used as a foreign object.

My Name is Earl

My Name is Earl-Logo“B.L.O.W.”
Season 2, Episode 16
2/08/2007

Unlike most sitcoms, My Name is Earl had a high concept which centered on this low-life dude who wins the lottery, but then immediately gets hit by a car. Having learned what karma is, Earl creates a long list of all the people he’s ever wronged and plans to use his money to right those wrongs. In this episode he helps a woman become a Black Lady of Wrestling and also have a baby.

Maron

Season 3, Episode 12

Sadly, Marc Maron has decided to end his show Maron after it’s fourth season. Personally, I thought it was just as as good as his podcast. Especially, if you wanted to actually see Maron work through his personal issues instead of just hearing him talk about them. Anyway, here’s a wrestling-ish episode that features CM Punk and Colt Cabana, both of whom were guests on previous episodes of WTF with Marc Maron.

While most people on Netflix were probably checking out DJ Tanner from Fuller House La Magistral Cradling Los Pollos Locos, they were probably too high on their nostalgia trip to check out another Netflix original show that featured wrestling.

American Angels: Baptism of Blood (1989)

With Netflix recently announcing that they’ve ordered a comedy series based on everybody’s favorite female wrestling league from the 80’s: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW), I figured I’d finally get around to reviewing the quintessential 80’s women’s wrestling movie, American Angels: Baptism of Blood.

“Wrestling with Demons”
Season 3, Episode 12
2/01/2001

Proving why The Undertaker has been so successful for all these years, comes another show dealing with the occult that somehow manages to work in pro wrestling as part of the plot. Side note: “Wrestling with Demons” should’ve been the title of the Jake “The Snake” Roberts documentary.

“Beyond the Mat”
Season 11, Episode 15
2/26/2016

The Supernatural Bros., Sam and Dean Winchester, investigate the sudden death of a wrestler. Which, in the world of professional wrestling, isn’t really that strange until you factor in that the death wasn’t due to heart failure, suicide, or drug overdose. Okay, maybe that’s not the best way to start this post. Did I mention The Miz makes a cameo? Wait… come back.
