The Best Cracked & MAD Magazine Wrestling Covers

IMG_2101Sadly, here’s another Cheap Pop Culture post based on somebody talented passing away. RIP Jack Davis.

Before Cracked became a listicle site and a podcast, and you were more likely to try a MAD Magazine fold-in than you were to look through its Twitter feed, these humor magazines served a purpose to many a youth when it came to satirical skewering of the pop culture we were surrounded with at the time. As wrestling caught on with the masses so did its coverage on many national magazines, giving us some pretty awesome Cracked and MAD magazine cover illustrations.

Walker, Texas Ranger

Walker-Logo“Crusader”
Season 6, Episode 16
1/31/1998

I can’t believe it’s already been a year since Roddy Piper passed away. He was as big a personality in the world of entertainment as he was in wrestling. But for every They Live or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia memorable part that Piper had a hand in, there were other lesser-known roles that he was just as entertaining in. Such is the case in this episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. RIP Hot Rod.

Baywatch

Season 6, Episode 15
2/19/1996

Some people stand in the darkness. Afraid to step into the light. Some people need to help somebody, when the edge of surrender’s in sight. When it comes crashing down and it hurts inside, you gotta take a stand it don’t help to hide. I am a real American. Forever and always, I’m always here.

Just as I was able to seamlessly mash up “Real American” and “I’m Always Here”, so were the producers of Baywatch who brought together two of the most popular, half naked, blondes of the 90’s.

Booking WrestleMania (The Movie)

Russell Madness

The last installment of the fictional WrestleMania cards. I was only able to come up with nine matches and that’s probably a good thing, or else the terrier from Russell Madness versus Zeus would’ve been a match booked on this card.

Royal Rumble Final Four

RR1992-3The Royal Rumble is upon us once again to help make Roman Reigns look even stronger. Last year, I took a look at the best #1 and #2 entrants. This year, I decided to showcase the top ten final four competitors. Because as fun as the Rumble is, everyone knows the best part is when it’s down to the last four wrestlers.

Mister Ed

Mister Ed Title“The Wrestler”
Season 2, Episode 12
1/7/1962

Yes. Mister Ed had a wrestling-themed episode. Sadly, it didn’t involve Mister Ed wrestling against a human wrestler. They could’ve at least used him as part of a grand spectacle of an entrance. Then again, it was 1962 and that sort of thing would’ve probably caused granny plants in the audience to faint.

2015: The Year of Wrestling in Pop Culture

IMG_49042015 wasn’t the greatest year for wrestling legends in terms of breaking news stories. Two of the greatest entertainers, Dusty Rhodes and Roddy Piper, passed away. Jimmy Snuka was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter of his then-girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, 32 years after the fact. And, even though former Hulkmaniacs thought it impossible, Hulk Hogan was able to further desecrate his legacy and contribution to professional wrestling by adding to his already long list of personal failures and embarrassments his dropping of the n-word. Multiple times. Seriously, you would’ve thought it was one of the Hulkamania commandments after “take your vitamins.”

Thankfully, this site focuses on wrestling in pop culture. So even when it’s bad, it’s not going to leave you depressed and questioning everything you kayfabe believed in. And luckily, 2015 was a good year for pro wrestling within the canon of pop culture.

Roddy Piper’s Wrestling-Related TV & Film Appearances

Tag Team 3

The fact that you can become just as popular as Hulk Hogan in the 80’s, and do an even better job at transcending pro wrestling and cementing yourself a spot in pop culture, without the full backing of the WWE, speaks volumes of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s endless talent and charisma. Nowadays, it’s clear that Piper not only made better life choices than Hogan, but he also made better career decisions when it came to acting on TV and film. My favorite part about seeing Piper in other forms of media was his interpretation of different wrestling gimmicks, even when they were simply an extension of the Hot Rod himself. So, here’s a look at the top 10 Roddy Piper wrestling-related appearances on TV and film.

World Wide Wrestling Web: Viva Lucha

Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 11.41.27 PMHere’s an animated short film from a group of art students from the School of Visual Arts/ Computer Art department. It’s a pretty cool reminder that more animated CGI films (both short and feature-length) should be made about luchadores.
